Seven-Seventy
The following is a brief overview of how 770 students can obtain their transcripts and transfer their credits to another institution of higher education. This overview is not intended to be authoritative, please double-check with the 770 administration before making any commitments.
The yeshiva located at 770 Eastern Parkway (770), and at Chovevei Torah, 885 Eastern Parkway, formally known as Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim-Lubavitz, is recognized by the United States Department of Education as a 4-5 year, private rabbinical college and is accredited by the Association of Advanced Rabbinical and Talmudic Schools. 770 is associated with many other Lubavitcher yeshivas around the world. Most Lubavitch boys will usually study at 770 at about 21-23 years of age, following shlichus and semicha. 770 offers two degrees: a First Rabbinic Degree degree (FRD) which is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and an Advanced Rabbinical Degree (ARD) which is equivalent to a master's degree. (New York State does not permit yeshivas to offer bachelor degrees, however, the degrees are considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree by many institutions of higher education.)
To qualify for an FRD from 770, a student must be enrolled in 770 for the two senior years at its central location. During the first three years, a student may be enrolled in a yeshiva recognized by the 770 administration as substantially equivalent to 770 from the age of 17. Additionally, a student must receive semicha from a recognized rov by the 770 administration. For a list of recognized institutions and rabbonim please contact the yeshiva administration.
To receive the ARD a student must first complete the FRD and study in 770 for an additional two years and receive dayanus from a recognized Rov. (If a student is enrolled in a kollel recognized by 770 as substantially equivalent to 770, the student will receive credits towards a degree offered by 770.)
770 records transcripts and applies a GPA to every student enrolled in 770, even if the student does not declare that they intend on using their degree. Additionally, 770 receives the transcripts from all recognized yeshivas that students transfer from. (770 has dozens of file cabinets with their transcripts since 1983 and from many transferee yeshivas.)
Note: To receive credits or transcripts from 770 (and every other yeshiva) a student must have been registered from the beginning of the school year. A student is only eligible for credits from the beginning of the year that they were registered.
What 770 degrees can be used for:
770 Credits can be transferred to other colleges and can count toward elective credits and even core credits toward another degree. Undergraduate schools accept anywhere between 24 to 60 credits. Additionally, the FRD is accepted by most law schools throughout the U.S. as an undergraduate degree necessary for admission. Additionally, there are a few business schools and education masters programs that accept yeshiva degrees as well.
Some official rabbinic positions, such as prison and military chaplains, require a bachelor's or masters or their equivalent, and an FRD or ARD meet those requirements.
Post-Baccalaureate or Post-baccs: Though there are many advanced educational programs that don’t accept the FRD or ARD, the degree may still be useful if the student gets a post-bacc, as it is much shorter and the student does not have to go through four years of college. See here for more information on post-baccs.
