Getting credits from your Yeshiva:

Many yeshivos are accredited, and if you attended any of those yeshivas, you might be able to transfer a few credits from that yeshiva to your undergraduate college. In addition, certain yeshivas can not only provide you with credits, but they can also provide you with an undergraduate degree (under the right conditions, see here), which enables you to go directly to certain masters programs.

There are currently five accredited Chabad yeshivas in the U.S., to the best of our knowledge:

  • 770, Brooklyn, New York

  • Oholei Torah, Brooklyn, New York

  • Rabbinical College of America, Morristown, New Jersey

  • Ohr Elchonon L.A. California

  • Yeshiva Gedola of Greater Miami, Florida

Accredited yeshivas can not only provide credits, but can grant a few types of undergraduate degrees to qualified students (such as BTL, FRD, and FTD degrees). These types of degrees are accepted in most law schools in the country. There are a few business schools and education masters programs that also accept degrees from yeshivas. (Of important distinction, most medical schools will not accept such degrees, and speak to a mentor about this in greater depth.)

Oholei Torah grants a First Talmudic Degree (FTD) to those who were enrolled for four years.  Yeshivas Ohr Elchonon offers a Bachelors of Rabbinical Studies (BRS). Yeshivah Gedola of Greater Miami offers Bachelors in Hebrew Letters. Morristown offers a Bachelors of Talmudic Law (BTL) for students that have attended their yeshivah for two years.

Even if you do not complete a degree at the yeshiva, you can usually transfer credits from yeshiva to another undergraduate institution. Every college has a limit of how many credits they accept from other institutions. Touro College, for example, accepts up to 48 credits towards a degree and require a minimum of 72 credits to be earned at Touro.

Accredited yeshivas will often accept credits from other yeshivas that a student had previously attended if the first yeshiva is deemed to be equivalent to the accredited yeshiva. For example, if a student studied in Israel for a few years (the student must have been 17 at the beginning of the year), and the administration of 770 considers the Israeli yeshiva to be equivalent to 770, they will accept up to 90 credits from the Israeli yeshiva.

That being said not all credits are equal; when a college program accepts credits from yeshivah, they need the yeshivah credits to be graded credits. While American yeshivah credits are all letter grade credits, the credits that they accept from Israeli yeshivahs are usually pass-fail credits and are not always respected by college admissions offices.
